My wife’s hearing aid used to pick up this noise and her party trick was to tell people that their phone was about to ring.

“Always found it cool that Grand Theft Auto 4 simulates this effect. If it's playing, your car's radio will buzz whenever you receive a call from one of the characters.”
“The UK government said they were turning off the FM signal in 2009, then 2015, and the last I heard they are going to review it in 2030. This beats the record for smart meters, all homes by 2019, then 2020, then 2025 which is now set at most homes by the end of 2030. As for petrol cars being taken off sale by 2030... anyone willing to put money on it?”
“I’m that one sad person that’s always wanted someone to explain this to me 😂 Glad you made this video!”
“This and the dial up noise, oh the nostalgia ☺️”
“My DAB radio was obsolete the first time I listened to it.”
“The DAB Bitrate in the UK is pitifully low resulting in a way under-par listening experience. I think far too many stations have been jammed into the available bandwidth. Low Bitrate on speech can make it sound as though the presenter has a sore throat. A good FM signal is far better in my humble opinion.”
“" Dozens Of BBC Transmitters Were Sabotaged To Silence Them " For a moment I thought this was the BBC's Director Generals new plan to save money.”
“Your mug did well on video. Either way you play it, you make great vids.”
“in the usa we didnt even need electronics, we just needed a box of captain crunch cereal, came with a nice 2600 hz whistle :D”
“I worked for a CE manufacturer for many years. We were very disappointed that the potential for DAB has been wasted, as they succumbed to commercial pressures to squeeze more and more stations into the available channels.”
“DAB = Dire At Best”
“My Mum listened to Classic FM on DAB until they went over to DAB+. Queue a phone call to me saying her radio isn't working! So now she listens to Classic FM on Fm. Progress!”
“Hiss and crackle is preferable to sqeaks and squarks.”
“I can confirm it wasn't just cheap PC speakers that picked up these signals. I was an intern at the National Public Radio station in St. Louis (KWMU) during the summer of 2003, and I remember getting the "buzz" from the studio monitors when I was in one of the recording studios. I also remember using the phone patch to call into my voicemail and record a new greeting using the studio mic. The quality really caught people off-guard.”
“AHA! It's Techmoan ... I knew it!”
“Not really related but another public phone thing - back in the 70's/80's small kids used to shove crisp bags up the coin return. Adults couldn't reach them. A few days later you'd go back and pull the bag out and the change would rain out. Then over to the sweet shop on the other side of the car park to spend it. Fun times.”
“"It's not me." Sounds like something a pirate would say.....”
“And the last words spoken in Irish. The Irish (Gaeilge) for “good night” is Oíche mhaith. Pronounced roughly: “ee‑ha wah.””
“Greetings from Kolkata, India 🇮🇳. I was listening to the final 30 minutes of the 198 kHz longwave broadcast via WebSDR, and it truly felt like witnessing the end of an era. It’s sad to see such an iconic service come to an end. This moment will remain memorable for radio enthusiasts around the world. Thank you for preserving and sharing this historic farewell.”
“I knew the original Brighton rebroadcaster of Fip. He passed away some years ago. He was directly connected to the 60's R. Caroline ship!”
“This was around the time that English owned Welsh holiday homes suffered arson attacks and "Not The Nine O'clock News" taking the piss with the "Come home to a real fire.... Buy a cottage in Wales" sketch.”
“Now, where did I put that Ethernet cable?”
“The UK missed a chance to make DAB good, they promised CD quality and ended up giving us sound worse than two tin cans connected with a piece of string.”
“My money is on the guy who first posted it.”
