“Travelling on the cruise ship, Canberra - post Falklands requisition - and picking up Radio 4 in the South Atlantic on the daily, never ceased to amaze my young mind. A sad day, indeed.”

“You're doing the world a service with these fascinating historical videos. Much of this would be lost knowledge and I'm glad to see it preserved in some form.”

“The font is one called Goldenbook, very similar to the old telephone lettering on the boxes but not quite identical. It's available with an Adobe Fonts subscription, which comes included with an Adobe Subscription used for photoshop etc, and interestingly it became available on that service in 2016. So perhaps a local graphic designer noticed a new font looked very similar to the old telephone box typeface and decided to play a little prank on a local telephone box? But why those letters in specific?! WE R JJ TEN?”

“The British government in tandem with the Dutch government raided and damaged Radio Caroline on the Ross Revenge under Margaret Thatcher. They were transmitting legally in international waters. There were no prosecutions following this act of piracy.”

“I was a BT exchange engineer and remember this very clearly. I worked in an electronic TXE4(RD) exchange. These had DTMF receivers fitted to the registers, initially just a few, but later on they were fully provided and most lines were set to dual signalling by default. On this particular exchange type all data was held by way of wires threaded through ferrite core transformers. So I had to re-thread every single public and renters coinbox line on the exchange to only accept pulse dialling. The coinbox engineers modified the payphones for pulse dialing. The later TXE4(A) exchanges had a VDU terminal and only needed a couple of commands typed in. Linkwise with digital exchanges. I think I got a few Saturdays overtime out of it.”

“Countries that have abandoned or discontinued DAB Finland – Abandoned DAB in 2005 because there was little listener interest and very few receivers. Portugal – Ended its DAB service in 2011. Hong Kong – Closed its DAB network in 2017 due to low audience uptake. Hungary – Ended DAB+ broadcasting in 2020. Romania – Switched off DAB in 2021 because of low listener and broadcaster interest. Ireland – RTÉ closed its national DAB multiplex in 2021 after very low listening figures, although there are now plans to relaunch DAB+ services. Canada – Never adopted DAB nationally. It abandoned its original DAB system and instead uses HD Radio in some are”

“I worked for a time doing radio repairs in a ham radio shop in Ohio during the early 1990s. One of my co-workers had been a repair technician for the cellular company in town. He told us the technicians in their shop would use their service monitors (fancy test equipment) to listen to cellular frequencies while they worked. One day they overheard a familiar voice, a VP of their company, discussing upcoming layoffs. They were all astonished that a cellular company executive would be so ignorant of how unsecure their cell phones were.”

“So many of us anoraks stayed up to listen to and/or record this. One of those truly shared (though obscure) experiences. I visited Droitwich a couple of times in my BBC career, but never worked there. Goodbye longwave - your job is done... :(”

“The analog of this in the US was the "blue box" created by John Draper, a.k.a. Cap'n Crunch. It worked exactly like the Tandy dialer shown, except the MF switching frequencies were different from American DTMF dialing digits. It also included two additional buttons to create the "KP" and "ST" tones required at the start end end of the dialing sequence. The Tandy DTMF dialers were easily converted to blue box MF dialers by switching the crystal. IIRC the DTMF dialers used 3.58MHz stock and changing that out to 6.5536MHz turned it into an MF dialer. My guess at the remedy installed is they just added a LC notch filter at 2400 or 2600Hz to the handset microphone. We also had "red box" coin simulators that produced bursts of 1700Hz + 2200Hz which counted as 5 cents each. A 25 cent coin generated 5 quick bursts. The capital to start Apple Computer came from selling a VW van, and HP calculator, and 50 blue boxes.”

“I work in the TV industry in technical departments and had to laugh out loud at the idea of the BBC sniffing wifi packets, its absurd. Every residential wifi is encrypted usually by some variant of WPA2/3 encryption (and not trivial to break) not only would that be a violation of the Computer Misuse Act 1990 to hack it but even if they did somehow want to go through all that effort to get even that far, theres still too many problems to that whole idea to even begin to cover.”
