“One thing I've learnt from working with young adult who might be struggling with independence, rather than saying 'do you want help with that?' I ask 'shall we do that together?' So instead of asking if they need help crossing the road I'd ask 'Hey, would you like to cross the road together?' It's such a small thing but it can really boost someone's feeling of autonomy.”

“my father fought in vietnam. he never spoke of it my whole life, even when he was asked about it. he is dying now & is receiving hospice care… vietnam is all he talks about now. it is horrible the evil memories he has been carrying around for over 50 years. he cries about it.”

“I adore this series so much. I live in the US, on the east-central coast of Florida. I work as a manager at a Wendy's. There is a homeless man, probably in his late 30's or early 40's, who comes in every 2 to 3 months, and asks for me, specifically, because the first time he came in after I became a manager there, he asked for a manager to speak to, and whispered across the counter "Is there any way I could get anything to eat? I'm homeless and I'm hungry. Anything will work." I made him a Dave's Double, gave him a medium fry and a cup for something the drink. He almost started crying as he was thanking me repeatedly. I told him "I've been where you are, my friend, and even if giving you this kindness were to cost me my job, it would be worth it, because I'd rather know I am kind, than be cruel just to placate corporate greed." Homeless people are still people. Still HUMAN. If you are a human being, you should have the capacity to be empathetic to other human beings, even when you can't understand their position. Just be kind, people. (Edit for spelling errors)”

“the man that talked about the printed page he wanted to touch as a child and then wishing to be able to see a printed image more than the face of his loved onces moved me so much. I totally get that. He grew up without computers, wrote a 600 page book by memory!! and became a professor. what a legend that man is!”

“I am very grateful these veterans were so open about their experiences. The state of the world today is very troubling and although it was hard to listen to them describe their experiences, I also feel it was necessary because we need to be prepared. These people articulated both the good and the bad of joining the military, and it is a hard job that not everyone can do.”

“They were candid. So much ... sadness? stress?... underneath. Their minds and bodies were injured. They are forever different from civilians. I heard so much that sounded negative, then most of them said with no hesitation that they'd go to war again. I didn't see that response coming! I am glad they all mention the importance of women in the army. On the subject of women, the ICC classifies r*pe as a war crime. It is a crime of violence. A soldier should be punished for attacking their own comrade-in- arms in this manner. Such violence against your own team is sabotage and unworthy.”
